Camp Hardy 1969
I also attended the summer camp at Camp Hardy as a 15 y/o. Our counselor was Sgt Don Valentine 1s. We spent a week at Fort Buckner Jump School and jumped the towers. We recieved weapons training with M-16's & M-79's, land and water survival, a lot of PT as Sgt Valentine wrote he tried to wear us out but didn't manage to. Two years later I enlisted in the Navy and found that basic training was a joke after that summer. Don Valentine has written about this and I'm sure would like to hear from others who attended that summer.Anyone who attended Camp Hardy summer camp, please send me an e mail so we can start a group. Anyone still have the certificates presented to us back then?

Sincerely Tim Keenan

I was a Staff Sergeant in 1971 (1st SF Gp), stationed at Camp Hardy. Our team (Sgt Weaver, SP5 Stuart and others) constructed a live fire confidence course in the "benjo ditch" area to prepare attendees for ambush immediate action. Great professionalism and training

Camp Hardy 1968/69
I was fortunate to be associated with a Boy Scout troop sponsored by the 1st SF on Okinawa. We met in a quonset hut in Camp Kue, near the Army Hospital. Maj. "Swede" Nelson was my first scoutmaster, followed by Spec. Fred Lammers. Great training for a kid. Camp Hardy was a special treat. 6 weeks long I recall. One week of survival, one of weapons (great fun!), one of comms (morse code - boring!), etc. Oh, the experience must have made a positive impact on me...I did choose a military career - but in the Coast Guard! Retired as an O-5. Anyone know what became of Maj. Nelson/Spc. Fred Lammers (All I remember is that he was a supply type and that he was from Ohio.)?

Camp Hardy 1969
I was one of the kids that spent the summer of '69 at Camp Hardy. Talk about a summer camp! Jumped the towers at Sukiran, skubadived, fired 16's and M-79's.Humped the boonies. Many of our Dads were 5th SF. Now that would not be considered anywhere close to acceptable (or PC) or whatever. I did not follow that path and become a snake-eater but it gave me a taste of what it takes to be one of the best and brightest this country has to offer. When we finished our "summer camp" the SF officer gave the ultimate complement to a bunch of 15-17 year olds when he said he would rather take us down South (to Nam) than any leg grunts. Never forget that. De Opreso Libre. Michael

As a young Special Forces Lt. with the 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne), I was assigned to be a Training Officer at Camp Hardy in 1968. In that role, I took many "Snakebite" teams through live fire exercises where we blew them out of the water when they were landing on the beach in rubber rafts and then shot them up on the beach in addition to setting off numerous 1/4 pound dynamite charges as they ran for cover. This continued on a forced march across the island - and coral outcrops - that lasted for 24 hours. We also trained two Navy SEAL Teams in land warfare, and they trained us in various insertion and extraction techniques. I later accompanied LTC Happersett on several "Snakebite" missions to Vietnam. When I first got in a combat situation, I was ready because of my training at Camp Hardy. In fact, live combat was never as "sporty" as the live fire exercises at Camp Hardy. My feeling to this today is that all soldiers going into combat should go through the training that I and others had at Camp Hardy. I later served with the II Corps Mobile Strike Force - the Pleiku Mike Force - and we put our Yards through live fire exercises like those at Camp Hardy. By the way, LTC Happersett and his wife Joyce are still alive and living in Cave Creek, AZ, where they raise Arabian horses. http://www.whitepages.com/name/Newlin-Happersett/Arizona

Newlin "Eric" Happersett, Lt. Col., US Army, Ret. passed away March 18, 2014 in Phoenix Arizona. Eric was born in 1923 Colorado and grew up on a ranch in Wyoming. At age 17 Eric enlisted in the US Army Air Corp. As result of his bravery and dedication to duty, he rose through the ranks and, after 26 years, retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. In Memory of Newlin Happersett

Obituary

Newlin "Eric" Happersett, Lt. Col., US Army, Ret. passed away March 18, 2014 in Phoenix Arizona. Eric was born in 1923 Colorado and grew up on a ranch in Wyoming. At age 17 Eric enlisted in the US Army Air Corp. As result of his bravery and dedication to duty, he rose through the ranks and, after 26 years, retired as a Lieutenant Colonel.

Eric's military career spanned three wars. As a gunner during World War II, his plane was shot down and he was captured and held as a POW in Nazi Germany for two years. Upon his release, he returned to duty and went on to serve in Korea where he was wounded in action. During the Vietnam War, Eric was a member of the storied 82nd Airborne Division. As a Green Beret in Special Forces he repeatedly fought behind enemy lines, served three tours of duty and was again wounded in action.

In 1970 Eric retired from military service and moved to Arizona where he worked as a Lieutenant in the Maricopa County Sheriff's Department and later became the City of Peoria Chief of Police.
A lifelong horse lover, Eric fulfilled his dream of having a horse ranch as owner of Bluegrass Arabians in Cave Creek. He and his wife Joyce made many friends in the Scottsdale horse community and were very active breeding, training and showing Arabians and Quarter Horses. He was also a devoted dog and all-around animal lover. As a genuine war hero and committed animal advocate, there are countless human beings and other living things who owe their lives to Eric.
Eric Happersett is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Joyce, brother-in-law and friend Ted Klainer, Sr; nieces Mary and Stephanie Klainer, and nephew, Ted S. Klainer.

There will be a visitation on Thursday, March 27th, 5 to 8pm at Shadow Mountain Mortuary, 2350 E Greenway Rd, Phoenix.
Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, March 28th, 9am at Our Lady of Joy Catholic Church, 36811 N. Pima Rd, Carefree, followed by internment at 11 am at the National Memorial Cemetery on Pinnacle Peak Road.

What was the Cpt's name in 1970? He had a wound to his right arm from Vietnam that left his arm in a 90degree right angle? He had a modified M16 just for his right arm.

I was attempting to get a formal copy of my training certificate. It doesn't look very promising. Anyway, I had a ten man team under me that took the embassy back from the VC in Phnom Phen, Cambodia in September 1971. They lost one marine in a softball game they were playing before we got on site. We went in after Nxon's speech no more ground forces in Cambodia. We were inserted in the airport on a twin turbo prop five men a trip from BearCat AB in the delta. We were in civilian clothes, unarmed. A spook met us at the airport and gave us weapons. We had civilian airport ID's and student ID's from a university in AZ. You're the only one I have been able to make contact with including the others that were on the mission with me. They evacuated the marines, defense attache and ambassador to they flag ship of the 7th fleet until we secured the embassy. They then flew them back in on Bell 212's.
I retired from a college in Florida and now live in Central America (Panama). The jungle school here closed several years ago also.

Cheers,
Sgt, Hil Jenkins
